Tridandisvami Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja

For Srila Prabhupada's Appearance Day

I Have Told His Glories

[Srila Narayanama Maharaja requested the devotees to sing je anila prema dhana.]

Senior devotees: do you remember how your Gurudeva came to this country without a farthing, and how he began his preaching from Tomkins Square park in New York? He made all the hippies happy. There are so many hippies here, but now they are happy, high-class devotees. Do you remember how he preached this mission and made so many temples all over the world, and how he distributed his books? Do you remember all of these things?

Srila Narotamma dasa Thakura is remembering how Caitanya Mahaprabhu came, and how He gave up his mother and new wife, and how there was nothing to eat in His home. [BRAJANATHA PRABHU - PLEASE ASK MADHAVA MAHARAJA WHY SRILA GURUDEVA SAID THE UNDERLINED. IS IT CORRECT?] He took sanyassa and became "cruel-hearted,"and then He went to Jagannatha Puri. At that time Advaita Acarya was present, but now He has also disappeared from this world. Weeping bitterly Narottama dasa Thakura sings this kirtana.

Prema, pure love, has two aspects: meeting and separation. For us sadhaka jivas, separation is more glorious. It is very favorable for jivas.

But when do we feel separation? When we have great attachment for a person, then separation may come. If there is no attachment there will be no feeling of separation. If you have great attachment for your Gurudeva, then you can feel separation. Your heart will melt and tears will flow from your eyes. If, however, there is no attachment to Gurudeva, if you are not serving him, how can you feel separation for him? Love and affection for Lord Sri Krsna and Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is very far away if you have no affection for Guru.

Charity begins at home -- everything begins from Guru and Vaisnavas. Try to have great attachment to your bona fida and high class of Gurudeva. I think of what kind of attachment I had when I first met my Gurudeva. He took me from this worldly position and dragged me by my sika. At that time I did not understand the height of his glories, but I am gradually understanding how glorious he was.

I have seen so many leaders here and there and in Vrndavana. They want to glorify their guru, Srila Bhaktivedanta Svami Maharaja, but I don’t think that they can touch even the lowest glory of their Gurudeva. I have told his glories in my classes. The second line of his pranama mantra is:

namas te sarasvate deve gaura vani pracarine

nirvisesa sunyavadi pascatya desa tarine

Our respectful obeisances unto you, O servant of Sarasvati Gosvami. You are kindly preaching the message of Gaurasundara and delivering the Western countries which are filled with impersonalism and voidism.

We must know the meaning of Gaura vani. What he preached was Gaura vani -- the glories of the gopis. ärädhyo bhagavän vrajeça-tanayas tad-dhäma våndävanam cant find the rest of the verse.

There are various types of devotees, and they are serving Radha Krsna in so many different ways. The sakhas of Vraja, like Subal, Sridam and Madhumangala, are very dear to Krsna. Mother Yasoda can bind Krsna with the rope of her love, but above and beyond that, the gopis can forever bind Him by their sidelong glances. They can capture Him in their hearts, and He Himself has admitted this fact in Kuruksetra: “They took Me in their hearts and embraced Me forever. I cannot repay them. They took Me in their hearts and embraced Me forever I am not able to repay My debt for your spotless service, even within a lifetime of Brahmä. Your connection with Me is beyond reproach. You have worshiped Me, cutting off all domestic ties, which are difficult to break. Therefore please let your own glorious deeds be your compensation.” The love and affection of the gopis is so great. This is Gaura-vani, the teaching of Sri Gaurasundara.

Caitanya Mahaprabu came for what?

anarpita-caréà cirät karuëayävatérëaù kalau

samarpayitum unnatojjvala-rasäà sva-bhakti-çriyam

hariù puraöa-sundara-dyuti-kadamba-sandépitaù

sadä hådaya-kandare sphuratu vaù çacé-nandanaù

May the Supreme Lord who is known as the son of Çrématé Çacédevé be transcendentally situated in the innermost core of your heart. Resplendent with the radiance of molten gold, He has descended in the Age of Kali by His causeless mercy to bestow what no incarnation has ever offered before: the most elevated mellow of devotional service, the mellow of conjugal love.

To give. To present what thing? Unatojjvala rasa sri. Not ujjvala rasa. Caitanya Mahaprabhu came to taste unatojjvala rasa not to give it. The wealth of Srimati Radhikas heart. What does he give? The beauty of that unatojjvala rasa. That can be given. Our Guruparampara, Srila Praphupada, Bhaktivinoda Thakura, my gurudeva, my siska guru Srila Bhaktivedanta Svami Maharaja and all, have not come to only preach kirtana. You can also do that. You are preaching kirtana here and there. Srila Swami Maharaja also did it and so did Caitanya Mahaprabhu, but with their kirtana they gave the highest love and affection -- gopi prema. Others can't do so.

namo maha vadanyaya krsna prema pradaya te

krsnaya krsna caitanya namne gaura tvise namah

I offer pranama unto Sri Krsna-Caitanya, who is  Sri Krsna Himself. Having assumed the  golden hue of Srimati Radhika, He is munificently bestowing krsna-prema, the rarest of all gifts.

For the same,

nama om visnu padaya krsna presthaya bhutale

srimate bhakti siddhanta sarasvatiti namine

sri varsabhanavi devi dayitaya krpabdhaye

krsna sambandha vijnana dayine prabhave namah

I offer my obeisances unto on visnupada Sri Srimad Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami Thakura Prabhupada, who is very dear to Krsna, who is most beloved to Sri Varsabhanavi-devi Radhika, who is an ocean of mercy and who is kindly bestowing realization of our eternal relationship with Sri Sri Radha and Krsna.

madhuryojjvala premadhya sri rupanuga bhaktida

sri gaura karuna sakti vigrahaya namo stu te

Again and again I offer obeisances unto Srila Sarasvati Thakura, who is the mercy incarnate of Sri Gauranga Mahaprabhu; who descended upon the Earth to bestow unnata-ujjvala madhurya-rasa, full, conjugal prema, and who is the embodiment of the line of Sri rupanuga-bhakti.

What is this untataujjvala? Srila Sarasvati Thakura was expert. He is a very near and dear servant of Srimati Radhika. He descended to sprinkle his mercy and give ujjvala madhurya rasa. We should realize this fact. I think this is the highest teaching and object of the preaching of Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja. Mostly his disciples could not understand this, and therefore they think, Narayana Maharaja is minimizing him. Why do they think like this? They are ignorant of all his true glory. They cannot touch his glories. I want to give the real object of his preaching. Lame people like me and you are preaching naga sankirtana everywhere, and also making some money and gaining position. These days new boys come and dance so much. I cannot dance for twenty four hours like them. But this is not so high. The mood with which one dances is important. Why Sri Caitanaya Mahaprabhu dance? His love and affection made him dance, and Swami Maharaja wanted to give the highest love and affection of the gopis. This was his mission. Bhakti is like a stream of the ganges river -- always flowing. Your bhakti should not stop in one place, otherwise it will be contaminated and polluted and you will fall down -- because nothing is there.

A man may have left his wife, children, worldly position, and all other material circumstances. Still, if he has not reached the stage of ruci (relish or taste for devotional practices), one is considered to be already fallen; it is not that he may fall down. He is fallen, whether he a sannyasa, brahmacari or in anything other asrama. Dress has no importance. It is the mood of a devotee that has importance. Try to develop some mood in your heart. In the fifth stage of bhakti called  Krsna-asakti the devotee weeps bitterly with a melted heart. At that time he prays:

ayi nanda-tanuja kiìkaraà

patitaà mäà viñame bhavämbudhau

kåpayä tava päda-paìkaja-

sthita-dhülé-sadåçaà vicintaya

“‘O My Lord, O Kåñëa, son of Mahäräja Nanda, I am Your eternal servant, but because of My own fruitive acts I have fallen into this horrible ocean of nescience. Now please be causelessly merciful to Me. Consider Me a particle of dust at Your lotus feet.’

(CC Antya 20.32)

“O Prabhu, O Nanda-tanuja (son of Nanda Maharaja), Yasoda Nandana, don’t forget me. Don’t keep me away from Your lotus feet. I want be  there, to serve You.” The gopi’s also pray like this. Those who are serving.

Verse and Translation - can't find: tan no prasidha tatatmanama purusur

Baladeva Prabbu is also praying. Even Nanda Baba in a separation mood has also prayed like that.

Service of Krsna's  is very beautiful, and there are two sides -- left and right sides. The right side is service to Krsna and the left is service to Srimati Radhika. The left side gives a greater transcendental mellow, taste.

Ayi nanda tanuja kinkaram krpaya……at this time, in the fifth stage of sadhana, a semblance of siddha-deha is sometimes manifest. What is siddha-deha? Every jiva is part and parcel of the Supreme Lord. Lord Krsna has a beautiful body, beuatiful lotus like eyes that shower beautiful sidelong glances. In the same way a spiritual body with spiritual qualities is already within the jivas -- even in their conditioned state -- but in a seed form. In their constitutional position they have a very beautiful and attractive body that can attract even Sri Krsna. A very high class of moods is also there but now they are covered by maya and are in latent postion. What is sadhana?

kåti-sädhyä bhavet sädhya-bhävä sä sädhanäbhidhä

nitya-siddhasya bhävasya präkaöyaà hådi sädhyatä

The process of devotional service-beginning with chanting and hearing-is called sädhana-bhakti. This includes the regulative principles that are intended to awaken one to devotional service. Devotional service is always dormant in everyone’s heart, and by the offenseless chanting of the holy names of the Lord, one’s original dormant Kåñëa consciousness is awakened. This awakening to Kåñëa consciousness is the beginning of sädhana-bhakti.

Everything is there is there in the transcendental position but it is latent, sadhana can simply manifest ones dormant consciousness. It can remove the covering of the soul, and then one is able to understand his constitutional position. In this stage of sadhana there is a semblance of realization of one's spiritual body (siddha-sarira). The devotee sometimes sees, “I am a servant of Sridam, Subala or any of the cowheard boys," or “I am a dasi of Nanda Baba and Yasoda," or "I am a dasi servant of Rupa Manjari" One of these moods begins to be realized. His heart melts and tears constantly flow from his eyes.

Caitanya Mahaprabhu came to give this.

I have come to remind you that you are also part and parcel of the Supreme Lord, and in your constitutional position you have a very beautiful form of a resident of Vraja; otherwise you couldn’t have come to the line of Caitanya Mahaprabhu. I am strongly emphasizing this idea; whether you know it or not, you are all eternal servants of Krsna and you have very beautiful and attractive forms and moods. If this were not so, you would have gone to take shelter of sampradayas such as Ramanujacarya, Madhavacarya, Vallabha, or you would have become Christians, or Buddhists. Mahaprabhu has shown you mercy, but don’t do any offenses to any Vaisnavas otherwise forever (verse???) If you have any doubt about your Guru, and he is bonafide, and qualified, but you are thinking, “He has some devotion, but he is not expert like me. I am expert in worldly things. I can make money, Prabhupada cant.” This is very offensive. Don’t have this mood. Don’t criticize any Vaisnava. Try to give honor to all Vaisnavas even if they are not initiated.

tåëäd api sunécena

taror api sahiñëunä

amäninä mänadena

kértanéyaù sadä hariù

One can chant the holy name of the Lord in a humble state of mind, thinking himself lower than the straw in the street. One should be more tolerant than the tree, devoid of all sense of false prestige and ready to offer all respects to others. ln such a state of mind one can chant the holy name of the Lord constantly.” (Çikñäñöaka 3)

Always remember to follow the principles of tåëäd api sunécena. You have collected some sukriti in the past millions of births and now you have come to this position. Don’t go down.

At that time a semblance of your siddha sarira will come. Don’t worry:

utsähän niçcayäd dhairyät

tat-tat-karma-pravartanät

saìga-tyägät sato våtteù

ñaòbhir bhaktiù prasidhyati

There are six principles favorable to the execution of pure devotional service: (1) being enthusiastic, (2) endeavoring with confidence, (3) being patient, (4) acting according to regulative principles [such as çravaëaà kértanaà viñëoù smaraëam [SB 7.5.23]-hearing, chanting and remembering Kåñëa], (5) abandoning the association of nondevotees, and (6) following in the footsteps of the previous äcäryas. These six principles undoubtedly assure the complete success of pure devotional service. (Upadesamrta verse 3)

I think that there are two reasons devotees fall down. They don’t have any utsaha, enthusiasm and secondly they make offenses, otherwise there is no reason for them to fall down. Don’t do offenses to any Vaisnavas, to anything related to Krsna, Mahaprabhu and all and thus you can advance. I wanted to tell you so many things. So many wonderful things are explained in Bhajana Rahasya, but time is very short. I wanted to finish this book but I couldn’t even finish one chapter.

So when this stage comes -- I am telling this for your future -- the devotee can meditate on verses like the following one by Srila Prabodhananda Sarasvati

venu karanni patitam sikhandam????verse……check BR

Bhaktivinoda Thakura is explaining this. Anuraga, Sri Krsna is nitya-navina, always new. Srimati Radhika tells Lalita, “I have never seen this black one before. Never, in my entire life.” Lalita replies, “Today I saw you sitting in the lap of that black person. I saw it myself.” Radharani “No, that was another person. I have never seen this person before.”

What is the meaning of  asamogdha, unparallelled?  Anuraga, love and affecton. The English the translation is love and affection. The same words are used for transcendental love and worldy love good or bad but in Sanskrit this is not so. Wordly love is lust, not love. Sraddha, nistha, ruci, asatki, rati (bhava) and then prema, sneha, maan, raga and anuraga -- these are all different gradations of love; they are not all the same. In English there are no equivelent words to describe these emotions. Asamurdhe chamatkaro Mahabhava in the gopis. In the fifth stage the devotee can meditates onthis having been inspired by the elevated associates of the Lord such as Madhavandra Puripada, Isvarapuri pada, Svarupa Damodara, Raya Ramananda, Raghunatha dasa Gosvami, Rupa Gosvami, Krsna dasa Kaviraja Gosvami, Visvantha Chakravati Thakura is not less, and Bhaktivinoda Thakura, the seventh Gosvami. If anyone is in their association he can think about this in the fifth stage -- not before that. Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura gives an example of how the devotee meditates in this fifth stage, called asakti, natural attachment for Lord Krsna, thinks. Srila Prabodhananda Sarasvati pada prayings, “When will a time come when I can serve Srimati Kishori with rasa, with the intrinsic emotion of my spiritual form, like a fountain? In his prayers he explains one of the symptoms of the madanakya-bhava of Srimati Radhika, the topmost love and affection. You should know that madanakya is only in Srimati Radhika; it is not even in Lalita and Visakha. This mood is not even within Sri Krsna. He took that form of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, and the mood of Radhika, only to realize madanakya-bhava. Do you know Padma? She is the closet sakhi of Candraval, Srimati Radhika's rival. She once temptated Krsna: “Candravali is about to die. If you don’t come at once, she will surely leave her body.” She then took Krsna in the kunja of Candravali. In the meantime, Srimati Radhika was waiting in Her kunja for Krsna, lamenting greatly and thinking, “Where is Krnsa?”

Very intelligent Rupa Manjari told Srimati Radhika “Please don't lament. I will bring that cheater very soon. He is a good person, but Padma is very tricky and crooked. She has tempted Him and caught Him, but I will bring Him back; so don’t lament."

After some time Rupa Manjari arrived at the place where Krsna was engaged in pastimed with Candravali and her associated. She went there and told Krsna, “You are here with Candravali, without knowing that a very big demon named Kesi has come. He is just about to kill your father, mother, and all your cows and calves -- and you are here?!” Krnsa said, “Candravali and Padma, you should stay here. As soon as I kill that demon I will return to you. Otherwise, he will kill everyone in Vraja.” Krsna then left to meet with Radhika, who had been bitterly lamenting. Time is over now. Tomorrow I will tell you more.
